Unit 19

 Soil-Vegetation modeling

This unit connects the concepts of infiltration of precipitation or meltwater into the soil, evaporation of soil and intercepted water, water-uptake and transpiration by plants.

Goals

The goal of this unit is to describe how the exchange of water vapor, water, and heat density fluxes can be described in soil-vegetation models of numerical weather forecast models, Earth system and general circulation models, climate models and hydrological models.

After successful completion of this unit students will be able to

  • Explain various types of soil-vegetation schemes
  • Assess soil-vegetation models and discuss their limitations and uncertainties (graduate students)

Students’ tasks

  1. All students: Watch this movie
  2. Graduate students: Watch this video on soil-vegetation modeling
  3. All students: Take notes and fill out the questionnaire.
  4. All students: Solve the tasks assigned at your class level in this Unit 19 Applications sheet and submit the scanned results by the deadline

For the curious student: Land Surface Models with input data (optional)
